Narayana says that the purpose of creating the work is to encourage proficiency in Sanskrit expression samskrita-uktishu and knowledge of wise behaviour niti-vidyam. India is now acknowledged to be the motherland of Fable Sanskriit as she is of almost every other branch of knowledge. The surviving text is believed to be from the 12th-century, but was probably composed by Narayana between to CE.
First published in The opening verse expresses reverence to the Hindu god Ganesha and goddess Saraswati. The Panchatantra of Visnusarma referred to above is its immediate parent, though the work of Kamandaka has been largely drawn upon, hitopdesa there are occasional quotations from the Mahabharata and other works. Much earlier, Sir William Jones encountered the work in and it was translated into English the following year by Charles Wilkinswho had also made the earliest English translation of the Bhagavad Gita.
