This gives the book a raw, real edge that drives home the fact that everyone has died, and the idea of two Powers fighting it out over the world adds to ls menace.
La nube purpurea : Matthew Phipps Shiel :
There has been an Eve spared to match his Adam. Apparently, there is more than one version of this novel. I’m glad I tackled it, though, if only for foundational literacy in the genre. I admit to some serious skimming at the end.
Although dated the adventure is rich and the twists and turns help maintain interest.
I suppose at the time perhaps the concept of being the last man nuge Earth and what that would do to one’s mind was unique, but it’s been done far, far better since. Arriving back alone from his gruelling, body strewn and somewhat hallucinogenic journey to the pole Jeffson discovers that all his shipmates aboard the expedition vessel the Boreal are dead.
Once past the North Pole, the real story begins and the book becomes almost sublime in its fevered visions. May 26, Bill Kerwin rated it really liked it Shelves: Eventually, Jeffson gets around to burning Istanbul and inadvertently frees the only other human survivor – Leda.

The final part of the book is almost too cloying and obvious, but Shiel pulls it off with such skill that the last few chapters fly past at blinding speed. The central character, Adam, returns from an Arctic expedition to find that a purple cloud has passed over the surface of the earth, killing everything.

This story is a manuscript she ‘read’ while her consciousness was cast into the future. Shiel’s book is John Sutherland’s intro placing it in the stream of other last-man novels, his tracing of Shiel’s strange life and career, and his extensive chronology and notes explaining the massive bloat-load of obscure terminology and minute description that clogs the story.
The beginning of this book began fairly well with an expedition to the North Pole.

The expedition is the latest in a long series of failures by otherwise well led and well supplied efforts. Jeffson’s great labor is arson. Be warned, there are strong misogynist and racist undertones throughout the book. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Perhaps it will soon. The prose reads like a nineteenth-century travelogue – very calm and studied – but the story reads like Mad Max. The Purple Cloud, despite its hysterical fustian is an important early example of Fantastika addressing its central topic which is the world as a whole.

He embarks on an epic journey across a silent and devastated planet, an apocalyptic Robinson Crusoe putting together the semblance of a normal life from the flotsam and jetsam of his former existence. He surely had a sort of feti This book is amazingly entertaining and, by coincidence, extremely topical. The plot in brief: There are times when Shiel is long-winded and tedious but al section is surprisingly effective more often than not.
This is one of those books that has a great premise post-apocalypse, last man alivebut is ponderous to read.
